Anyone who suffers from diabetes probably knows about the glycemic index, or has at least heard of it, because it is of particular importance to diabetes patients and others who must be concerned about glucose levels in their bloodstream. Since the carbohydrates in foods have the ability to raise blood glucose levels, it’s necessary for such people to be aware of how much any food containing carbohydrates does actually raise blood glucose levels.

This is known as the glycemic index (GI) of the food, and a high GI means that the food will raise your glucose level a lot, whereas a index will raise blood glucose levels much less. Some people may not be bothered by diabetes, but they may still have a low tolerance for high levels of glucose in their bodies, so they simply avoid any kinds of food which contain carbohydrates and contribute to high blood glucose.

Most fruits and vegetables are known to have low glycemic indices, because they are high in fiber, and are not processed foods. Generally speaking, the more processing a food undergoes before reaching your table, the higher will be its glycemic index. Because Keva Juice of Northern Nevada has always had the health of its customers in mind, we provide the following five low-glycemic smoothies, so that you can enjoy to the max, while feeling guilt to the min!

Bulls Eye

The Bulls Eye comes in three different sizes: the 12-oz. size, the 24-oz. size, and the 32-oz. size, and all three of these are totally satisfying as a refresher. Made with sugar-free Red Bull, strawberries, and strawberry blend, there are less than 3 grams of sugar in one 12-oz. serving. For a small extra charge, you can add in any of the following: whey, sub almond milk & yogurt, wheatgrass, sub coconut water, extra Red Bull, shot of espresso, honey, ginger, sub almond milk only, monster, emergenC, soy milk, chia seeds, pure organic acai berry, hemp seed, agave, and pure organic pitaya. You’ll also have the option of making your smoothie skinny, strong, ‘stress relief’, smart, swell, or sassy. Finally, you can modify your smoothie by making it all fruit, extra thick, split into two cups, or entirely contained in a tumbler.

Bluffin Muffin

This delightful smoothie is made from skim milk, non-fat vanilla yogurt, and blueberries, and at just over 19 grams of sugar per 12-oz. serving, it stays solidly with the low glycemic index for people with low tolerance. Available in 12-oz, 24-oz, and 32-oz sizes, the Bluffin Muffin is a taste treat that will not disrupt your body’s glucose levels, so it can be enjoyed without guilt. All the same options listed above with the Bulls Eye can be added in to this smoothie as well.

Double Berry Blast

For diabetics and those with low glycemic tolerance, this smoothie is a great choice, since it comes in with 12.5 grams of sugar per 12-oz. serving. As you might guess from the name, there are two different kinds of delicious berries added to the mix, strawberries and raspberries, with skim milk included as well. If you prefer, soy milk or almond milk can be substituted for the skim milk, and again, all the options listed in the Bulls Eye smoothie description are available for this concoction as well. This smoothie can be ordered in any of the three standard sizes, 12-oz., 24-oz., or 32-oz.

Berry Green

This smoothie includes a little green in its composition, namely kale and spinach, along with carrot juice, skim milk, strawberries, blueberries, and banana. When it’s all blended together, it comes up with less than 12 grams of sugar per 12-oz. serving, so it’s the perfect healthy treat which remains within the low glycemic index range. All the options available with the Bulls Eye smoothie apply to this mix as well, but in addition, you can add in another option if you choose, to give it an extra flavor boost: the apple boost, the raspberry boost, or the ‘keep it real’ boost. The usual three size options apply also, at 12, 24, and 32 oz. sizes.

The Green Hulk

A rich green appearance is created along with a taste extravaganza in this smoothie made from spinach, banana, carrot juice, blueberries, almond milk, and peanut butter. With less than 19 grams of sugar per 12-oz. serving, the mixture can also be selected in either the 24-oz. size or the 32-oz. size. All the same options can be includes as are listed for the Red Bull smoothie above, as well as an extra option for a flavor boost: the raspberry boost, the apple boost, or the ‘keep it real’ boost.

Thank you for finally adding drinks for diabetics. As a recently diagnosed diabetic I’ve missed Keva Juice drinks during this hot summer. Can’t wait to try one of the new drinks.

Another consideration is that non-fiber carbs increase glucose levels. We need to be concerned about the total # of carbs (minus fiber carbs) that are in each drink. This will give diabetics a better indication of how much each drink will raise their blood sugars.
